On this page you’ll find answers to all your questions:

  • Arrival and domestic transfer. You will land at Auckland, Wellington on Christchurch International airport, and will need to clear customs and immigration there. A representative from an Airport Transfer company that is working with Talley’s will meet you at the Arrival Gate and transfer you to the domestic terminal to catch a flight to Blenheim or Nelson. There you will be met by your Talley’s Pastoral Care Coordinator - look out for the person wearing the Talley’s jacket.

  • Day 1 Orientation. The Accommodation Manager and local Filipino Community Association representative will be at your accommodation to welcome you. A SIM card and supermarket vouchers will be supplied. You will be shown around your accommodation and explained how everything works before being taken to a supermarket to buy any food/supplies you might need. You will also need to fill in some forms for your bank account.

  • Day 2 Orientation. Your Pastoral Care Coordinator will take the group out on a tour to familiarise you with the local area including supermarkets/shops, Church, Citizens Advice Bureau and other amenities.

  • Day 3 Bank Account activation/tax number. Your Pastoral Care Coordinator will take you to the local BNZ bank to finalise your bank accounts. You will then receive cash cards and be able to use your accounts. (Once you account is open Talley’s will apply for your New Zealand tax number.)

You will be picked up from your accommodation every day and taken to work in in a mini van.

You will also be dropped home at the end of your shift.

3. Where will I stay?

Talley’s operates fish processing sites at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, in Motueka and Blenheim.

You’ll be living in furnished, self-catering accommodation. Sheets, bedding and towels are supplied in Blenheim. If you are staying in Motueka you will need to bring your own towels.

Each unit has a kitchen, with cooking equipment, and a washing machine. The cost of electricity, gas and wifi is included in your weekly rental.

Alcohol and dried fish are prohibited from the accommodation.

4. What happens if I get sick or injured?

  • Dial 1-1-1 for emergency help and/or an ambulance.

  • National Health Index (NHI) number is assigned to you when you arrive. This will be your access and tracking number in the healthcare system.

  • A general practice doctor (GP) is your gateway to the health system. If you need to see a doctor, take your passport and visa paperwork to the clinic. A GP can look after your health, prescribe medication, and refer you to any necessary specialists. The closest GP practice to your accommodation is The Doctors, 27 Wallace Street in Motueka and Civic Health Care, 22 Arthur Street in Blenheim.

  • If you need urgent or after-hours healthcare, you can visit Urgent Care located at the hospital in Blenheim, or in Motueka local GPs provide this service. If your condition is very serious, go to the Accident and Emergency Department at the public hospital in Blenheim or if you’re in Motueka you will need to drive through to Nelson Hospital

  • Getting medication. Your GP will provide you with a prescription for you to take to your local chemist or pharmacy to be filled.

  • Healthline is a phone service where you can access free health advice either after hours or when you aren’t established with a GP.

  • Interpreters are available via video or telephone at most clinics. You can also get language support through Language Assistance Services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

  • Health needs resulting from an accident are covered for free for anyone in New Zealand, regardless of immigration status, under the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC)

5. How can I find the local religious and Filipino communities?

The Ministry for Ethnic Communities maintains a directory for you to find ethnic and religious communities. You can also look for religious organisations here. Online platforms like Facebook, Neighbourly, and MeetUp can also be good places to find others in your neighbourhood or others from your home country in New Zealand.

Motueka

St Peter Chanel Catholic Church - you are welcome to attend services at St Peter Chanel and speak with Father Paul who has spent time in the Philippines.

KEE’S MART is a Filipino Food Store that is located in Nelson (40 minutes from Nelson / 1.5 hours from Blenheim )

To make orders phone or message Elena Antipuesto on 027 2768195. Elena will deliver on Saturday morning to Motueka and send a delivery once a week to Blenheim.

6. How about bank accounts, tax and cost of living?

Talley’s will also help you get a tax (IRD) number which you will need for your first pay.

The cost of living in New Zealand varies by location and your standard of living. This cost of living calculator is helpful for broadly estimating your expenses and income. Your main cost will probably be food, so take a look at the PAK'nSAVE and Countdown supermarkets to get a good feel for how much you can expect to spend. Eating out is a more expensive option, and you can search for restaurants on your favourite map platform and look around their published menus for pricing information.

Talleys will help you set up a bank account with Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), and it should be operational within a week of your arrival in New Zealand.

BNZ has local branches in both Motueka and Blenheim. In the meantime you’ll be given vouchers to purchase food.

If you need independent help,The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) provides free, confidential, independent information and advice to anyone, helps people know what their rights are, and advises on how to access services people need. You can also access advice in your language.

You can get CAB’s help by accessing CAB’s Migrant Connect portal, visiting your local CAB (no appointment needed) or phoning your local CAB or calling free on 0800 FOR CAB (0800 367 222).

7. Where can I get help if I need it?

The friendly Talley’s Pastoral Care team is here if you need them.

You’ll meet them when you first arrive and they will take you on an orientation tour around Motueka or Blenheim. After that if you are in Motueka you can contact Ashley Park on 03 528 2884 or in Blenheim contact Hope Wineera on 03 572 6100 (during working hours). After hours you can contact your Accommodation Manager - in Motueka that is Jo (who lives on-site), in Blenheim it is Grant on 027 253 7933.

8. What must I do before leaving the Philippines?

  • Make sure you have all your documentation.

  • You CANNOT bring any fresh food into New Zealand so please do not pack any in your bags. When arriving in NZ you MUST declare all goods that pose a biosecurity risk including any packaged/dried food, plants, wooden products, soil, water, outdoor equipment, and animal products. There are big fines if you fail to do so.
